Google+ for iOS updated with communities, profile editing, better event handling, and more

Google+ for iOS updated with communities, profile editing, better event handling, and more

Google has just updated their Google+ social networking app for iOS to version 4.0, and among the new and improved features is support for Google+ Communities, the ability to set timezones and indicate guest numbers in events, profile editing, a new compose interface, and a new design for visual stream. According to Google:

On iOS, our new version lets you swipe through photo albums inline; you can tap once to view photos in all their glory; and the iPhone app now applies a subtle pan-zoom-scale effect to pictures in the stream.

Google also, not surprisingly, rolled out a major Google+ update for Android at the same time.

However, the quality and quantity of their recent iOS updates makes the iPhone one of the best Google phones on the market. That might seem counter-intuitive, but Google isn't in the hardware or even OS business. It's in the data aggregation and advertising business. They're skating to where the high-value eyeballs are. (More on that in a future post.)

Google+ 4.0 is a free update, like the app itself, and you can grab it now from the App Store.

Chavez faces cancer surgery in Cuba, vows he'll be back

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez flew to Cuba on Monday for cancer surgery, with a vow to return quickly despite conceding for the first time that the disease could end his 14-year rule of the South American OPEC nation.

"I leave full of hope. We are warriors, full of light and faith," the ever-upbeat Chavez said before boarding the flight to Havana. "I hope to be back soon."

Chavez, 58, pumped a fist in the air as he set off for the latest chapter of a tumultuous rule that has included a brief coup, persistent acrimony with the United States and frequent nationalizations, as well as wildly popular anti-poverty programs.

The socialist president first suffered an undisclosed form of cancer in the pelvic region in mid-2011. He had appeared to improve and easily won re-election in October but now faces a fourth round of surgery for a second cancer recurrence in the same area.

The news sparked a rally in Venezuela bonds on Monday, given many investors' preference for more a business-friendly government in Caracas.

Chavez stunned Venezuelans over the weekend with his nationally televised announcement that more malignant cells had been found, despite twice having declared himself cured.

END OF AN ERA?

Chavez's re-election in October was helped by heavy government spending on social programs and his intense emotional connection to followers who view him as a larger-than-life figure.

He is due to start a new six-year term on January 10.

His departure would mark the end of an era given his flamboyant leadership of Latin America's hard left and self-appointed role as Washington's main provocateur in the region.

Chavez has named Vice President and Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro as his preferred successor, urging supporters to vote for Maduro in the event of an election. The constitution stipulates a vote within 30 days should he be incapacitated.

In his first appearance following his anointment, Maduro wept as he vowed the country would remain faithful to Chavez and carry on his self-styled revolution.

"We are going to accompany President Chavez in prayer and in action," Maduro said at a campaign rally for state governors. "We've been with (him) in the good times and bad times."

Allies including former Vice President Elias Jaua and Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez came forward with good wishes for the president. Ramirez read a statement from oil workers vowing unbending loyalty to Chavez and promising to support Maduro.

State media promoted a Twitter campaign for the president by splashing hashtags including #ElmundoestaconChavez (the world is with Chavez). By midday, it was one of the microblogging site's top global trending topics.

The health saga has once again eclipsed major national issues such as state elections on Sunday, a widely expected devaluation of the bolivar currency and a proposed amnesty for Chavez's jailed and exiled political foes.

If a new election were needed, the opposition could be in its best position to win since Chavez took power in 1999. Many voters have overlooked the government's failings because of their deep emotional connection with the president.

But the opposition's prospects may hinge on the result of the vote for Miranda state governor on Sunday. A loss there for Governor Henrique Capriles could fracture the coalition that backed him as a unity presidential candidate and spark a return to an era of infighting that benefited Chavez and his allies.

Capriles, 40, lost to Chavez in October but got 44 percent of the vote - a record 6.5 million votes for the opposition in the Chavez years.

Opposition leaders say Chavez's condition is serious enough that he must officially step aside and temporarily designate the vice president to lead the country while he is in treatment.

Failure to do so, they say, could paralyze decision-making and lead to fighting within the ruling Socialist Party.

Chavez's backing of Maduro was seen as a snub to Congress head Diosdado Cabello, who is widely considered Maduro's rival despite their public statements to the contrary. Chavez pointedly called for unity and "no intrigue" before leaving.

The opposition also has criticized the secrecy surrounding the details of his medical condition and his snubbing of local doctors in favor of those in Cuba.

"Hiding information for partisan gain without regards for the good of the country is not democratic," said Ramon Guillermo Aveledo, the leader of Venezuela's Democratic Unity coalition.

Venezuela's heavily traded global bonds rallied 2.81 percent in price, according to returns tallied by the J.P. Morgan Emerging Markets Bond Index Plus (EMBI+).

INTERNATIONAL IMPACT

Chavez's health has major implications for the region.

A handful of Latin American and Caribbean neighbors - from Cuba and Nicaragua to Bolivia and Ecuador - have come to depend on his oil-fueled largesse to bolster their fragile economies. OPEC member Venezuela has the world's largest oil reserves.

War-torn Syria, which is facing tightening sanctions by the United States and the European Union, has received much-needed shipments of diesel from the sympathetic Chavez government.

Despite Chavez's selection of Maduro, his "Chavismo" movement could disintegrate without him given rumored rivalries among the main players. Goldman Sachs analyst Alberto Ramos warned in a research note of "a possibly noisy, and not necessarily short, political transition in Venezuela."

Maduro, a 50-year-old former bus driver and union leader, is the most popular of the senior "Chavistas" among the president's working-class supporters, thanks to his affable manner, humble background and close ties to Chavez.

His six years as foreign minister have also given him good contacts in countries such as China and Russia. He has an easygoing style but is a firm believer in Chavez's leftist policies and has often led fierce criticism of the United States.

Supporters have been holding vigils for Chavez around the country, and even though he was absent on Monday, his image was everywhere on state media and in public squares.

Messages of support also have poured in from abroad, and Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, a fellow socialist, joined Chavez in Cuba.

"We've come in solidarity," Correa said. "He is a historic president, a great friend ... and most of all an extraordinary human being. You are not alone in your struggle."

ARM's CortexA50 chips promise 3x performance of current superphones by 2014, throw in 64bit for good measure

We knew this was coming, not least because someone let the cat out of the bag (or at least a paw) last night. Nevertheless, it's only today that we're getting the full picture of ARM's "clean sheet" v8 architecture, and you know what? It's pretty astounding. Top billing goes to the Cortex-A57, which is said to deliver "three times the performance of today's top smartphones" without guzzling any additional power. Alternatively, the chip could be designed to deliver the same performance as a current smartphone or tablet but make the battery last five times as long -- which would make that Surface RT just about five times nicer than it is already. How's all this possible? Read on for more.

Prosecutors: Colo. teen confessed to Ridgeway murder

By NBC News staff and wire services

Seventeen-year old Austin Reed Sigg appears in court Thursday in connection with the death of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway. Officials say Sigg will also face attempted kidnapping charges of a 22-year old jogger back in May. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

Updated at 1:01 p.m. ET: A Colorado teenager has confessed to the abduction and killing of a 10-year-old girl and in a separate attack on a runner, prosecutors said Thursday.?

Austin Reed Sigg, 17, made his first court appearance Thursday in the death of Jessica Ridgeway and an assault on a 22-year-old female runner in May.?

Authorities said Thursday they have "overwhelming" DNA evidence against Sigg.

Sigg lived about a mile from Jessica Ridgeway, who disappeared Oct. 5 while walking to school in Westminster, a suburb northwest of Denver. Her body, which police said was "not intact," was found five days later in a park in Arvada, about 9 miles from her home.

Sigg made his first court appearance Thursday, shackled in a turquoise jumpsuit. He kept his head bowed for much of the time and asked only one question during the hearing, which was for clarification on his rights as a defendant.

The judge told Sigg to consult with his attorneys for clarification, which he briefly did, then nodded to the judge to apparently indicate that he understood.?

In arguing to deny bail to Sigg, Jefferson County Deputy District Attorney Hal Sargent said that investigators have obtained "a confession and DNA evidence."?

"The evidence is overwhelming," he said.?

A police custody report released on Wednesday said Sigg waived his right to counsel when investigators first spoke to him, in another indication he might have discussed the crimes.?

During the hearing, Sigg made eye contact at one point with relatives of Ridgeway, who were in the courtroom wearing purple ribbons in the girl's memory.

Westminster Police Dept. via AP

Jessica Ridgeway went missing on her way to school on Oct. 5, 2012.

Sigg's mother cried on and off during the proceeding, which lasted about 35 minutes.?Security was tight, with 14 armed deputies in court.

The judge ordered the teen to be held without bond and set the next court hearing for Tuesday.

Sigg is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, felony murder and kidnapping in Jessica's case, and with criminal attempt to kidnap and murder in a Memorial Day attack on a jogger at Ketner Lake.

District Attorney Scott Storey said the law prevents prosecutors from seeking the death penalty because Sigg is a juvenile, even though he is being prosecuted as an adult.?

Police in the Denver suburb of Westminster said they took Sigg into custody Tuesday night after receiving a phone call, apparently from his mother, that led them to Sigg.?

Reached by phone, Sigg's mother told The Associated Press he turned himself in.?

"I made the phone call, and he turned himself in. That's all I have to say," said Mindy Sigg, before she broke down in tears and hung up.

Authorities said Sigg, who is a student at Arapahoe Community College, also will face charges in the May 28 attempted kidnapping of the 22-year-old runner at the Ketner Lake Open Space. Police have said the two crimes are connected but haven't elaborated.

Jogger: Stranger put rag over my mouth
In the May case, a woman fought off a stranger who grabbed her from behind and put a rag that smelled of chemicals over her mouth, authorities said. Police haven't determined if the substance on the rag was meant to subdue the woman.

Authorities have released few details about their investigation, and court documents have been sealed. A police custody report said Sigg was cooperative when he was arrested and waived his rights.

Acquaintances have said Sigg was interested in mortuary science and forensic science, often wore black and hung out in the high school cafeteria's "goth corner." ??

Sigg had attended Witt Elementary, but he moved on to middle school in 2007, before Jessica enrolled at Witt, Jefferson County Public Schools spokeswoman Lynn Setzer said.? ?

Sigg later attended Standley Lake High School while also taking classes at Warren Tech, a district school that offers specialized training in health science, public safety, technology and other fields.? ?

He left the school district in July after finishing the 11th grade and later earned a GED. School officials don't know why he left.? ?

Arapahoe Community College officials confirmed Sigg is enrolled there but wouldn't release other details.

Sigg's ex-girlfriend?told 9NEWS.com?Sigg having a hard time coming to grips with what he is accused of.

"The Austin I knew would never have done anything like that," the ex-girlfriend, who the TV station?identified only as "Danni," said. "He was my first boyfriend. He was my first kiss. He was my first date."

She said she doesn't remember any warning signs, but said Sigg did have a collection of weapons.

"I knew he had a sword collection in his room or a knife collection or whatever. But it was his man cave. A lot of people collect stuff," Danni said, according to 9NEWS.com.

Did the changing climate shrink Europe's ancient hippos?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Giant German hippopotamuses wallowing on the banks of the Elbe are not a common sight. Yet 1.8 million years ago hippos were a prominent part of European wildlife, when mega-fauna such as woolly mammoths and giant cave bears bestrode the continent. Now palaeontologists writing in Boreas, believe that the changing climate during the Pleistocene Era may have forced Europe's hippos to shrink to pygmy sizes before driving them to warmer climes.

"Species of hippo ranged across pre-historic Europe, including the giant Hippopotamus antiquus a huge animal which often weighed up to a tonne more than today's African hippos," said lead author Dr Paul Mazza from the University of Florence. "While these giants ranged across Spain, Italy and Germany, ancestors of the modern Hippo, Hippopotamus amphibius, reached as far north as the British Isles."

Hippos were a constant feature of European wildlife for 1.4 million years, during the climatically turbulent time of the Pleistocene era, which witnessed 17 glacial events. The experience of such environmental changes would not have been without cost, and Dr Mazza and co-author Dr Adele Bertini, also from Florence, investigated the impact this changing climate may have incurred.

The research focused on fossils from across Europe, ranging from the German town of Unterma?feld in Thuringia, to Castel di Guido, North of Rome, and Collecurti and Colle Lepre in Italy's Central Eastern Marche province. The fossils were compared to a database of measurements taken from modern African and fossil European hippos.

"The German fossil from Unterma?feld is the largest hippo ever found in Europe, estimated to weigh up to 3.5 tonnes," said Mazza. "The Collecurti specimen was also large, but interestingly even though it was close in both time and distance to the Colle Lepre specimen the latter specimen was 25% smaller. A final specimen, an old female from Ortona in central Italy, was smaller again. It was 17% smaller than the Collecurti fossil and approximately 50% lighter."

The team found that a clear size threshold separated hippo specimens which heralded from different parts of the Pleistocene age. The hippos from the early Pleistocene were the largest ever known while smaller specimens emerged during the middle Pleistocene. Larger specimens briefly reappeared during the late Pleistocene.

"We believe the size difference was connected to the changing environmental conditions throughout the Pleistocene," said Mazza. "The Ortona hippo, the smallest of the specimens, lived in a climate where glacial cycles turned colder, while cold steppes replaced warm ones across the Mediterranean."

The drop in temperature and rainfall during the Pleistocene caused significant changes to plant life across Europe resulting in an expansion of grassy steppes. Being grazers hippos may have been expected to thrive in this new environment. Unexpectedly they appeared to shrink, only re-attaining their past size during the warm periods of the late Pleistocene, when forests and woodland re-colonised the steppes.

During their time in Europe hippos were forced to live in habitats influenced by a general environmental trend towards cooler and drier conditions. In response hippos achieved giant sizes during warmer and relatively more humid stages, but became smaller, and even very small, under non-ideal environmental conditions.

"While hippos are normally considered indicators of warm, temperate habitats this research shows that temperature was not only the controlling factor for their ancient ancestors," concluded Mazza. "Our research suggests other factors, such as food availability, were equally important. Appreciating the importance of factors beyond temperature is of great significance as we consider how species may adapt to future ecological and environmental changes."

U.S., South Korea agree to boost ballistic missile capability

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea has reached a landmark agreement with the United States to extend the reach of Seoul's ballistic missiles by more than twice the current limit to counter the threat from North Korea, the government said on Sunday.

The move to significantly boost the South's missile capabilities is likely to rattle the communist North which has remained at odds since the 1950-53 Korean War left the peninsula divided.

It may also stoke concern in China, Japan and Russia, parts of which would be within range of the new missiles.

Under the agreement, South Korea can develop missiles up to a range of 800 kms (497 mile) from the current ceiling of 300 kms (186 mile), Chun Young-woo, top secretary to President Lee Myung-bak for foreign and security affairs, told reporters.

He said the United States and South Korea also agreed to maintain the maximum payload for a South Korean-developed ballistic missile at the current level of 500 kilograms (1,102 lbs).

However, if Seoul chose to develop a missile with shorter ranges, it could increase the payload accordingly.

Seoul has for years sought to extend its missile range to deter the North, which it said had developed missiles that could reach every corner of the country.

"The most important goal for our government to revise the missile guidelines is deterring North Korea's military provocations," Chun said.

Currently, all of South Korea as well as U.S. military installations in Japan and Guam, are within the range of North Korean missile attacks, according to South Korean government data.

In April, North Korea was condemned by the U.N. Security Council after a failed long-range rocket launch. U.S. allies including South Korea deemed it a disguised test for the North to upgrade its ballistic missile technology despite Pyongyang's claim that it was aimed to put a satellite into orbit for peaceful purpose.

Washington had sought to discourage South Korea from developing longer-range ballistic missiles in keeping with a voluntary international arms-control pact known as the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).

Blessing of the Animals celebrates love of pets - Kane County ...

GENEVA ? Like most older dogs, Lucky, a 15-year-old Bichon Frise, is having some health issues.

Owner Mike McDonnell of Geneva thought Lucky could use a blessing or two, which is why brought him to the lawn of the Old Courthouse in downtown Geneva on Sunday for St. Mark's Episcopal Church's sixth annual Blessing of the Animals ceremony.

"I'm hoping it will give him a few more years," McDonnell said.

Accompanying Lucky was McDonnell's other dog, Pudge, a Lhasapoo. He was grateful to be bringing Pudge to the event.

"He got away from us last Thanksgiving," McDonnell said. "We found him later at an animal shelter in Aurora. It was the longest night of our lives. We thought we had lost him."

The event also celebrated the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, known as the patron saint of animals and the environment.

"He loved nature so much," said the Rev. Mark Tusken senior pastor at St. Mark's, who offered blessings to the animals along with the Rev. Claudia Nalven, assistant rector at St. Mark's. "It's a great day to give thanks to our pets for the love they offer us."

Jan Risch's 11-year-old Golden Retriever, Boomer, dutifully sat in front of her as Nalven wished the well-behaved dog good health and other blessings.

"We have so much joy with our animals," Risch said. "He's a good boy. He's rather shy."

Although the majority of animals that Nalven blessed on Sunday were dogs, she also gave blessings to a cat and even a turtle.

"People love their animals," Nalven said. "For some people, pets are part of their family."

Nalven herself owns a 10-year-old rescue dog.

"I love animals and I love the opportunity to pray for people I haven't met before," Nalven said.

TT's Gillispie ordered to avoid stress for 30 days

(AP) ? Billy Gillispie said doctors have ordered him to avoid any stress for 30 days in an effort to bring the Texas Tech basketball coach's blood pressure down.

In a text message sent to the Associated Press on Monday, Gillispie confirmed he'd been treated for kidney problems and abnormal headaches last week at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

The school had no comment on Gillispie, who is currently on indefinite sick leave as Texas Tech gets set to begin practicing Oct. 12.

Gillispie spent four days at the Rochester, Minn., medical facility. That followed an earlier six-day stay at Lubbock's University Medical Center that began Aug. 31, the day Gillispie was to meet with Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt to discuss allegations of mistreatment of players.

A group of players met with Hocutt on Aug. 29.

Ambulances were sent to Gillispie's home twice in a 10-day span. The 52-year-old, entering his second season with the Red Raiders, was taken to the hospital after he called 911 early on Aug. 31, hours before he and Hocutt were to meet. It was not immediately clear who called 911 the evening of Sept. 11, but Gillispie was not taken to the hospital.

Hocutt told Gillispie last week that the coach was no longer to make day-to-day decisions for the basketball program or to engage with it at all so he can focus on his health. Associate head coach Chris Walker is in charge.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal first reported Gillispie was to avoid stress for 30 days.

Texas Tech went 8-23 last year, winning just one game in Big 12 play.

Gillispie had been out of coaching for two years when he came to Lubbock. He previously was head coach at Kentucky, Texas A&M and UTEP. Kentucky fired him in 2009 after the Wildcats went 40-27 in his two seasons and missed the NCAA tournament for the first time in 17 years.

Greek opposition leader hardens anti-bailout stance

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek opposition leader Alexis Tsipras hardened his line against the country's international bailout on Saturday, vowing to fight an austerity round that Athens is negotiating with its lenders.

The 38-year-old leftist said he would mobilize his lawmakers and supporters against the measures to prevent them from causing irreparable harm to Greece's economy, after more than two years of austerity measures that have slashed wages by a third.

"The time to stop the catastrophe is now," Tsipras said in a speech in the northern city of Thessaloniki. "These measures must not pass. They will deliver the final blow to the people."

Capitalizing on popular frustration with past cuts, Tsipras's Syriza party surged from the political fringes to become the second-biggest party in a June election, losing narrowly to conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras who now heads a fragile three-party coalition.

Athens is currently negotiating with inspectors from the European Union and International Monetary Fund over new cuts that will further erode household incomes after five consecutive years of recession and unemployment of almost 25 percent.

Exasperated by its poor reform performance so far, lenders are pushing Greece to agree and pass the measures soon if it wants to qualify for further rescue payments and avoid a chaotic bankruptcy that could force it to abandon the euro.

Violent demonstrations against past austerity measures contributed to the fall of a Socialist government which negotiated Greece's first bailout in May 2010. Greece's biggest labor unions have called a 24-hour strike against the planned measures for September 26.

The only way for Greece to cope with its spiraling debt was to repudiate a large part of it, Tsipras said: "That's the only credible and viable way to way to get out of recession."

He said Greece must work with other indebted European countries and he brushed aside concerns it risked getting kicked out of the euro.

"Nobody in the euro zone has a political motive to force a country to leave," Tsipras said. "Germany definitely has no such motive".

The Greek government dismissed Tsipras's promises to repudiate debt and reverse all wage and pension cuts made over the past two years.

"The only thing he didn't clarify is in which currency he will honor his pledges," said government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou.

"At Syriza they're making dreams of printing drachmas."

"Go-Topless Day" in New York seeks equal rights to bare chests

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Some two dozen topless women protested in a New York City park on a hot, sweaty Sunday as part of what they called "National Go-Topless Day" to draw attention to inequality in topless rights between men and women.

There were topless men in the park, too, but nobody paid them much attention, a disparity, organizers said, that demonstrated the need for the event.

The topless women drew crowds of onlookers who took pictures and video with their cell phones.

"We say there is nothing wrong with the female nipple," Karen Heaven, an organizer of the event, told the crowd that quickly formed around her in Manhattan's Bryant Park. She was wearing white pants and not much else besides a purse over her shoulder. "My dog has six, I have two, but I can be put in jail for showing my nipples. It's 2012 -- what are we thinking?"

It is legal for women to go topless in public in New York City but laws vary widely across the United States. Heaven and her colleagues say discrimination is unconstitutional and they want full equality.

Similar protests were scheduled in about 30 U.S. cities and 10 around the world, organisers said.

The annual Go-Topless Day was established in 2007 by a former sports car journalist called Rael, who founded a religion called the Raelian Movement after he said he was visited by a space alien in a French volcano park who told him life on Earth was created by extraterrestrial scientists, according to an account on his website.

Occasional references to alien creators did not seem to register with the crowd, which focused mostly on the breasts.

"I'll show these to a few friends and then delete them after a few days," Rudy Sison, a New Yorker who happened to visit the park on Sunday, said as he thumbed through photographs and video he had just taken on his phone. "They're topless."

Several women waved signs saying: "Equal Topless Rights For All."

After the speeches, a guitarist led the crowd in a reworking of The Beatles' song "Let It Be."

"Let 'em breathe," people sang. "Let 'em breathe."

S. Africa police fire at striking mine workers

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South African police opened fire Thursday on a crowd of striking workers at a platinum mine, leaving an unknown number of people injured and possibly dead. Motionless bodies lay on the ground in pools of blood.

Police moved in on striking workers who gathered on a rocky outcropping near the Lonmin PLC mine Thursday afternoon. On TV footage, a volley of intense gunfire could be heard. Private television broadcaster e.tv showed images of still bodies lying in the blood in the dust. Another image showed some miners, their eyes wide, looking in the distance at heavily armed police officers in riot gear.

Police Capt. Dennis Adriao, a spokesman for the officers at the mine, declined to immediately comment. Jeff Wicks, a spokesman for private ambulance company Netcare Ltd. that was standing by at the mine, also declined to comment.

Barnard O. Mokwena, an executive vice president at Lonmin, would say only: "It's a police operation." Lonmin is the world's third largest platinum producer

In a statement earlier Thursday, Lonmin had said striking workers would be fired if they did not appear at their shifts Friday.

"The striking (workers) remain armed and away from work," the statement read. "This is illegal."

The unrest at the Lonmin mine began Aug. 10, as some 3,000 workers walked off the job over pay in what management described as an illegal strike. Those who tried to go to work on Saturday were attacked, management and the National Union of Mineworkers said.

On Sunday, the rage became deadly as a crowd killed two security guards by setting their car ablaze, authorities said. By Monday, angry mobs killed two other workers and overpowered police, killing two officers, officials said. Officers opened fire that day, killing three others, police said.

Operations appeared to come to a standstill Tuesday as workers stayed away from the mines, where 96 percent of all Lonmin's platinum production comes from. The stoppage has spooked those investing in Lonmin. Stock in Lonmin plunged 6.33 percent in trading Thursday afternoon on the London Stock Exchange.

While the walkout appeared to be about wages, the ensuing violence has been fueled by the struggles between the dominant National Union of Mineworkers and the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union. Disputes between the two unions escalated into violence earlier this year at another mine.

Both unions have blamed each other for the strife at the mine at Marikana, about 70 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Johannesburg.

Aspire campaign raises record $1.88 billion for Princeton University

?

The five-year Aspire campaign, which ended on June 30, exceeded its $1.75 billion goal by raising $1.88 billion ? substantially more than any campaign in Princeton's history ? to support the University's programs of teaching and research as well as its efforts to prepare students from a wide range of backgrounds for leadership in a complex world.

"The success of this collective effort to strengthen the University to better serve the nation and the world is a tribute to the dedication, enthusiasm and generosity of our alumni, parents and friends," said Princeton President Shirley M. Tilghman. "In countless ways, the Aspire campaign has reinforced our traditional strengths while allowing us to break new ground and prepare to achieve our highest aspirations for the years ahead."

The campaign focused on a carefully determined set of priorities: strengthening the core Princeton experience; providing unrestricted funds through the Annual Giving program for efforts such as the University's groundbreaking financial aid program; and enhancing the University's capacities in engineering and the environment, the creative and performing arts, neuroscience, and global citizenship.

More than 65,000 donors (undergraduate and graduate alumni, corporations and foundations, parents, and friends) ? including more than 77 percent of all undergraduate alumni ? contributed 271,559 separate gifts to Aspire since it was launched in November 2007. Among other purposes, these gifts established 26 new professorships, 120 new undergraduate scholarships and 25 new graduate fellowships.?

In the final year of the campaign Annual Giving set a new record by raising $57.2 million, with an undergraduate alumni participation rate of 60.8 percent. Over the course of the campaign Annual Giving twice set new dollar records, with alumni, parents and friends contributing a total of more than $254.5 million in Annual Giving funds ? unrestricted support that is essential to the University's financial stability and flexibility.

In keeping with Princeton tradition, the campaign was conducted largely through the efforts of volunteers. The work of alumni from more than 85 undergraduate classes, graduate alumni and parent volunteers across the country and around the world was guided by Aspire campaign co-chairs Robert Murley of the Class of 1972 and Nancy Peretsman of the Class of 1976. During the first two years of the campaign, the Annual Giving effort was led by Rajiv Vinnakota of the Class of 1993; for the final three years, he was succeeded by Kelly Doherty of the Class of 1981.

Significant funds were raised in all of the University's areas of priority. The most notable achievements include:

In the creative and performing arts, a $101 million gift from Peter B. Lewis, a 1955 alumnus and University trustee, established the Lewis Center for the Arts, which has allowed Princeton to expand its offerings in visual arts, music, dance, theater and creative writing. Additional funds were raised for a new program to bring visiting artists to campus and to create new faculty positions. Also, the directorship of the Princeton University Art Museum was endowed, and new curatorships were established.

In engineering and a sustainable society, a $100 million gift from Gerhard R. (Gerry) Andlinger, a 1952 alumnus, established the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, which focuses on sustainable energy development, conservation and environmental protection, in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The campaign also led to the creation of a center for innovation in engineering education, which encourages students to connect academic theory to practical needs in order to develop solutions to a variety of problems around the world.

The Grand Challenges Initiative, a collaboration among the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and the Princeton Environmental Institute, generated funding to allow faculty and students to work together to develop sustainable energy, combat emerging infectious diseases, and overcome natural resource limitations in developing countries. And a new building ? Sherrerd Hall ? now serves as the home of the Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering and the Center for Information Technology Policy.

Two major funds have been created to support groundbreaking research: a transformative technology fund, for the development of new technologies that have the potential to enable significant scientific advances; and an innovation fund for engineers who wish to pursue projects that may be outside their formal area of expertise or are too speculative to attract conventional funding.

In neuroscience, gifts to the campaign established three major centers of research within the Princeton Neuroscience Institute to better understand the physiology behind human behavior and to discover information that may aid in the battle against neurological disorders: a center for systems neuroscience; a center for the neuroscience of mind and behavior; and a center for neural circuit dynamics. Several multimillion dollar gifts also are funding a new complex, currently under construction, to house the institute and the Department of Psychology.

In global citizenship, gifts are backing initiatives that help give students a more international and multicultural perspective and that enable the exchange of ideas across national borders; and centers that promote a better understanding of subjects that affect the creation of effective public policies. One such initiative is the Bridge Year Program, which allows small groups of incoming freshmen to defer their enrollment for a year to engage in public service while immersed in another culture.

A global fellows program, which brings promising early-career faculty members from around the world to campus, is being established, and a center for globalization and governance, which brings together students and faculty from economics, history, sociology and political science to explore the academic and policy dimensions of globalization and international governance, was endowed.

Two newly supported centers will focus on economic literacy, with the goal of giving leaders the knowledge they need to create sound public policies. A center for public policy and finance within the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs is a hub for study across various disciplines that intersect with public policy and finance ? including economics, operations research, political science, history and ethics. A center for economic policy studies brings together experts in academia, government and industry for frank discussions about crucial financial issues.

The campaign also is providing support for various aspects of teaching, residential life and athletics ? elements that make up a large part of the core Princeton experience for students. Generous support for the financial aid program allowed the University to meet the increased need for aid during the recent economic downturn, and Princeton's hallmark freshman seminars gained additional funding. Students also will have more opportunities for community service, thanks to the campaign.

Butler College, first constructed in 1964, was rebuilt as a state-of-the-art dormitory complex composed of five new residence halls funded by gifts. Princeton's athletics program benefited from support for renovated and new facilities, including venues for football, soccer, lacrosse and tennis. Alumni also endowed the directorship of athletics and a range of other opportunities for varsity and recreational student-athletes. The campus was made safer for pedestrians by a new bridge spanning Washington Road.

A final report on the Aspire campaign, including an honor roll of donors and volunteers, will be posted online in the fall. Aspire was the fourth and largest formal fundraising campaign in Princeton's 266-year history.

Samsung Galaxy S III review: Good -- but not perfect

Featured

Microsoft has to do it. That's what I keep telling myself. In order to convert people from the cloud-powered "ecosystems" of Apple or Google... Read more

5 hrs.

At least two heads turned when I received my Samsung Galaxy S III recently. How could they not when I loudly exclaimed?? alright, practically squealed?? that "it's here, it's here." Those same two heads shook, an hour later, as their owners watched me hurl?obscenities?at the gadget.

"You were supposed to be perfect! Why aren't you perfect, you stupid ..."

Don't get me wrong,?I had high expectations for the Galaxy S III???and the smartphone met most of them. But what it failed to do is provide the perfection I craved, a reason to abandon my trusted iPhone 4S and finally switch to Android. It's just too rough around the edges (metaphorically speaking, of course, as its actual edges are flawlessly curved).

The Galaxy S III is easy on the eyes with its big, bright screen, smooth corners, and almost frighteningly slender body. It's powerful and speedy (for some benchmarks, check out Laptop Mag). It has a camera decent enough to make a basic point-and-shoot?unnecessary. It's battery will get you through a day.?And boy-oh-boy, many of Samsung's tweaks make Android look oh-so-appealing.

That's the big picture, of course. The?details ? the devil's always in those, isn't he? ? are where the Samsung Galaxy S III struggles to amaze.?

When the folks of Samsung first showed off?the device, they pushed its "natural interaction" front and center. This was supposed to be a phone that can listen, watch and respond in ways never experience before. Unfortunately the features which should make all that happen are unpolished.

The Galaxy S III is supposed to?recognize?whether you are looking at it or not,?and appropriately maintain comfortable?screen brightness levels. Either my eyes somehow elude all detection or the phone was trying to tell me to take a break from staring at it?? because it refused to keep the screen from dimming at times.

S Voice is a feature which is basically a counterpart to Apple's Siri. It is a personal assistant of sorts and supposed to recognize natural language. Unfortunately it's often unresponsive and prone to mangling commands, even if they are the simple ones provided as examples. (And don't even think about asking a Galaxy S III whether you'll need an umbrella in Tampa,?Florida on Friday. Such a complex?question, which is quickly answered by Siri, baffles the Samsung device.)

The Galaxy S III cleverly starts dialing a contact if you open his or her details then lift the phone to your ear. I quickly became enamored with this small but incredibly useful feature. Unfortunately it sometimes takes the device a moment or two to recognize that it's being held against my ear?? and I could definitely have manually placed the call by that point.

Are you noticing the pattern? The Galaxy S III is a solid phone. It has all the basics covered well, but it disappoints when it comes to the features that should have pushed it over the top. It's a sleek?rocket ship adorned with rusty bells and whistles.

So what's the verdict? Well, if you're an iPhone-obsessed individual like yours truly, stick with your beloved iOS device?? because the Galaxy S III won't impress you as much as you'd want it to. But if you're already an Android smartphone user and looking for an upgrade? Jog, don't walk, to the nearest store. Just because I don't think the Galaxy S III tears away the label of "best smartphone on the market right now" away from the iPhone 4S doesn't mean that it's not the best Android device at the moment.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Melanie Sykes - Melanie Sykes Goes Public With 'twitter Boyfriend'

Melanie Sykes and her toy-boy Jack Cockings went public with their relationship during a day out in London this week. Despite the cloudy weather, the television presenter opted to wear a pair of extremely short workout shorts, with bright pink vest and sports trainers, as she and Jack wandered around Hampstead.

The 41-year-old and her new beau certainly played up for the cameras, laughing and joking, with Sykes at one point grabbing her own bottom with two hands. Melanie asked the photographers not to take any pictures of her sons Roman and Valentino, though seemed happy enough for the paparazzi to snap herself and new boyfriend Jack. The couple reportedly met on the micro-blogging site Twitter, sending each other a number of raunchy public messages. According to the UK's Metro newspaper, Sykes wad ridiculed for writing, "Jack the rabbit I need some bunny love so hop to it!! Xxx boing boing!!! Loooooool xxxxxxx", before adding, "'I've got the raging horn, please take me", and later telling followers she had "the giddiest knickers" of her life.

Sykes was previously married to the Italian actor Daniel Caltagirone, though they split in 2008 after having two children together. The couple's divorce was finalised in June 2009.

Nortel finance execs caught up in tax fight

Nortel Networks Corp. has asked a bankruptcy judge to shield two of its finance executives--one current, one former--from the state of Michigan, which says the state Treasury's owed $1.7 million and someone's going to pay.

In a filing Friday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del., Nortel asked a judge to enjoin the state from trying to collect taxes during the bankruptcy case. Nortel also wants the bankruptcy court to issue a ruling that its executives can't personally be held liable for the unpaid bills.

A spokeswoman for Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette declined comment on the Nortel tax dispute Monday, citing active litigation.

The tax tiff is not the biggest-ticket item in the bankruptcy of the telecommunications company, which is now in its fourth year. Long out of business, Nortel in the U.S. is sitting on more than $1 billion of its own cash and is angling for a share of $7.3 billion in proceeds from Nortel's global liquidation.

But the dispute highlights the perils of corporate tax trouble for executives who hold the pursestrings of companies that are circling the drain.

It's especially perilous in Michigan, a state that has seen perhaps more than its fair share of collapsed businesses and heard more than its share of excuses, said Stephen Dunn, an attorney who hands civil tax disputes for businesses. He's with Dunn Counsel PLC.

"What happens in Michigan when a business ceases operating and it owes Michigan taxes--and I mean any taxes--the taxes are assessed personally against the responsible officers," Mr. Dunn said.

"The state of Michigan is saying,'If you have the benefit of doing business in our state, if your company doesn't pay its taxes, you cannot just slip away and avoid liability,'" Mr. Dunn said.

Nortel U.S. Vice President of Finance Allen Stout and Jeff Wood, a former Nortel tax vice president who now works for Ernst & Young, got letters this year from Michigan's Treasury, the state's business tax collector. As executives with the power to say who gets paid and who doesn't, they fit the definition of responsible person, in Michigan's view.

Epson WorkForce WF-7520

Aimed squarely at micro, small, and home offices that need wide-format printing at up to 13 by 19-inch supertabloid size?and even larger?the Epson WorkForce WF-7520 ($299.99 direct) offers almost any feature you might want in a multi-function printer (MFP). Among the most important is that it includes two trays, so you can load one with letter-size paper and one with a larger size, to let you easily use one printer for all your printing. Factor in the fast speed and reasonably high-quality output, and it easily earns a place on your short list if you need to print at larger than letter and legal size.

The WF-7520 is directly competitive with both the Brother MFC-J6910DW ($350 street, 4 stars) and the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J6710DW ($300 street, 4 stars). However, there are two key differences between both Brother models on the one hand and the WF-7520 on the other. Both Brother printers are limited to printing on a maximum 11 by 17 inch paper (tabloid size). The WF-7520 can handle standard sizes up to 13 by 19 inches and custom sizes up to 13 by 44 inches. The other difference is a higher cost per page for the WF-7520, a point I'll come back to later. For the moment, just note that whatever advantages the WF-7520 offers, it costs more to print with.

The Basics, Setup, and Speed
The WF-7520's MFP features include printing, scanning, and faxing, including over a network, and being able to work as a standalone fax machine and copier. Its strong points start with paper handling for both printing and scanning. The two 250-sheet paper trays can each hold paper as large as 13 by 19 inches, and they make it easy to load two paper sizes at once so you can switch between them. Also worth mention is the built-in duplexer for printing on both sides of the page.

For scanning, both the flatbed and the 30-page ADF can handle up to tabloid-size paper, and the ADF can duplex by turning the page over during scanning. A particularly nice touch is that the combination of a duplexing ADF and duplexing printer lets you copy both single- and double-sided originals to your choice of single- or double-sided copies. Even better, unlike many MFPs with duplexing ADFs, the WF-7520 can scan in duplex for faxing and scanning as well as for copying.

Setup is standard, with the printer offering both Ethernet and WiFi network support. For my tests I connected it to a wired network and printed from a Windows Vista system.

Epson WorkForce WF-7520 All-in-One Printer

On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), I clocked the WF-7520 at an effective 3.9 pages per minute (ppm), making it a close match to the MFC-J6910DW and MFC-J6710DW, which both came in at 4.1 ppm. Photo speed was also closely matched, with the Epson printer averaging 2 minutes 34 seconds for a 4 by 6 and both Brother printers coming in only slightly faster, at 2:23.

Output Quality and Other Issues
When it comes to output quality, the WF-7520 is par for an inkjet for text and graphics, and above par for photos. Text in my tests was easily good enough for any business application, with many fonts highly readable at sizes as small as 5 points. With graphics, I saw some minor banding in some full-page output in default mode. However, depending on your level of perfectionism, you may well consider even the default output good enough for handing out to customers or clients who you need to impress with a sense of your professionalism. The graphics quality overall is certainly suitable for almost any business use.

Photos in my tests were better than what I expect to see from drugstore prints. Black and white photos in particular scored well by not showing any tints at any shade of gray. The WF-7520 isn't quite in the same class for photos as the best inkjets aimed at serious amateur photographers and professionals, but the quality is easily good enough by most people's standards to let you print a photo at large size for framing.

Not so incidentally, photos are also the one category of output where the WF-7520 has an advantage over both Brother printers. For some offices, or for dual use in a home and home office, that alone might make it your preferred choice. Similarly, its ability to print on larger paper than the Brother printers can handle makes it the obvious choice if you need to print at the larger size. However, many offices can do without either feature. And, as I've already mentioned, the Brother printers have a clear advantage in running costs.

Based on cartridge prices and claimed yield, the running cost for the WF-7520 is 3.2 cents for a standard letter-size mono page and 11.3 cents for color. That works out to 1.5 cents more per page than the Brother printers' claimed cost for mono and 3.4 cents more for color. Depending on how many pages you print, this can add up to a large difference over the lifetime of the printer, and it's a strong argument in favor of either Brother printer.

That said, if you must have high-quality photos or the ability to print on paper larger than tabloid size, the Epson WorkForce WF-7520 may well be your printer of choice. And if running cost isn't a critical issue, the Epson WF-7520 offers enough capability to make it a more than reasonable choice in any case.

(AP) ? Theo Walcott finally got his chance at the European Championship, and he only needed three minutes to make it count.

Walcott scored shortly after coming on as a substitute and then set up Danny Welbeck for a sublime winner as England rallied for an entertaining 3-2 win over Sweden on Friday.

The result eliminated Sweden from the European Championship and put England on course for the quarterfinals. The English only need a draw against co-host Ukraine in the final group game to advance.

"Just to make my first appearance in such a high-profile arena it just means so much to me," Walcott said. "It's been a long time waiting and hopefully there'll be more to come from me."

Walcott was overlooked for his younger Arsenal teammate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in England's opening game of the tournament, only coming on in injury time, and again began on the bench on Friday in favor of James Milner and Ashley Young. But after England wasted a halftime lead to fall behind 2-1 against a Sweden team desperate for a victory, coach Roy Hodgson turned to Walcott in the 61st minute.

Three minutes later, Walcott put England level with a swerving shot from distance after a corner was headed out to the speedy winger outside the area.

He followed that up by breaking into the area and sending a low cross to Welbeck, who flicked a backheel past a diving Andreas Isaksson in the 78th to give England its first win over Sweden in a competitive game in eight tries.

"It was a very clever finish," Hodgson said. "It was goal worthy, in my opinion, of winning the game."

England gets Wayne Rooney back in the next game after a suspension, but with Walcott and Andy Carroll both putting in strong performances, Hodgson will a tough decision as to who will be on the bench.

"We all know the ability Theo has got and that's the same right across the squad, so whoever comes on the pitch is going to make a difference," Welbeck said. "I'm very happy for Theo."

After a 1-1 draw against France, Friday's victory may silence some of the critics who thought England had become too defensive-minded under Hodgson as it proved that it can score goals when it needs to.

"We felt, from the first game, that we wanted to pick it up a bit more offensively," Walcott said. "And if you score three goals that's the main thing."

Sweden, for its part, let a second-half lead slip away for the second game in a row after falling 2-1 to Ukraine in its opener. While the Swedes put in a much-improved performance on Friday, they once again failed to shut their opponents down defensively.

"I thought we were a much better team than them," Sweden captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic said. "We've taken the lead in two games now after 60 minutes and then lost it. ... But today we played exactly the way we want to play."

In a game that featured plenty of chances for both sides, Carroll had given England the halftime lead with a powerful header in the 23rd minute that showed exactly why Hodgson elected to start the tall Liverpool forward up front. Carroll got between two defenders to meet Steven Gerrard's cross into the area as Sweden was once again exposed in the air.

But Sweden fought back through an unlikely source in Mellberg, whose shot past Joe Hart was pushed into the net by Glen Johnson. The veteran defender, who has said he will quit international football after this tournament, then rose highest to meet a long free kick from Sebastian Larsson to put the Swedes ahead in the 59th.

"It was a cracking game of football," Hodgson said. "We were reasonably comfortable at halftime and had a good control of the game before they rocked us on our heels."

But Walcott then started the English comeback when a corner was headed out to the Arsenal winger outside the area and his shot wrong-footed Isaksson, who was falling the wrong way and flailing with his arms as he watched the ball fly into the middle of the net.

"They were much more effective than we were," Sweden coach Erik Hamren said. "I'm really proud of the players. We showed the mentality and the attitude I wanted to see. ... But to win games you need also a little bit of luck."
