Explosive Texas City Little League game now even has $1M lawsuit

Parents of a Little League baseball player who was hit in the head by a line drive during a game that included allegations of an altered bat have sued Little League for more than $1 million.

Emmett Parsutt Sr. and Elena Parsutt filed the suit Thursday in Galveston County's 212th State District Court on behalf of their son, Emmett Parsutt Jr., against League City Little League Inc. and Little League Inc.

Little League International officials in Pennsylvania had announced the day before that examination of the bat in question showed it was not altered. Altering a bat would be a violation of league rules.

Chance McMillan, the Parsutts' attorney, said the organization's announcement left the family with unanswered questions about the bat used in the July 1 championship game between the Santa Fe Little League All Stars and the League City Little League All Stars.

"We have concerns that the bat sent (to Pennsylvania) may not have been the bat used," McMillan said Tuesday.

"Little League has conducted a study on some kind of bat, but we need to know more about it."

On Monday, State District Judge Susan Criss granted the plaintiffs' emergency motion to preserve the bat as evidence, ordering the defendants not to perform any testing, especially destructive testing, on the bat.

Emmett Parsutt Jr. was the starting pitcher for the Santa Fe Little League All Stars team during the July 1 game against the League City Little League All Stars, according to the lawsuit.

League City won the game 8-0, winning the right to advance to regional tournaments.

During the game, which took place in Texas City, suspicion arose that League City was using an altered metal bat, the suit states.

In the fifth inning, a line drive struck Emmett Jr. in the head with "tremendous force - far beyond that of a regulation bat - and injured him," the suit states.

While Santa Fe parents and coaches were tending to the boy, a League City parent took the bat to the parking lot and locked it in his car, the suit alleges.

When the League City parent refused to let others see the bat, the Texas City police were called, the suit says.

The pitcher, meanwhile, was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment and still suffers headaches, McMillan said.

The boy's doctor has told him not to play any more baseball this summer, the attorney said.

A spokesman for Little League International South Williamsport, Pa., said the organization could not comment on pending litigation.

Predator Reboot Rumored at Fox

predators-slice

2010?s Predators was a fun little B-movie, and although it was a modest hit, it didn?t provide the blockbuster returns that would prompt 20th Century Fox to seriously revive the franchise.? However, it looks like Fox hasn?t given up the cloaked and dreadlocked alien hunter just yet.? For people who still followed Predators on Facebook, they were given a new message this weekend?a line from 1987?s Predator: ?There?s something out there waiting for us, and it ain?t no man? We?re all gonna die.?? The image is a top-down, thermal view of San Diego?s Gaslamp Quarter.? Unlike everyone else with a Hall H panel, Fox stayed quiet on the information they provided to Comic-Con organizers, but THR is reporting that the studio will be bringing The Wolverine, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and a ?surprise?.? I don?t know if X-Men: Days of Future Past could be considered the surprise since even director Bryan Singer has mentioned a Comic-Con appearance for his movie.? The surprise could be the recently announced X-Force, or it could be the return of Predator.? Personally, I think either film would go over huge with the crowd.

Hit the jump to check out the image.? Fox?s Comic-Con panel is from 4:15pm to 5:45pm on Saturday, July 20th. [Update: Hero Complex reports that Fox will actually be announcing a 3D Blu-ray release for?Predator, not a new film.]

Mexico advances to Gold Cup quarterfinals in Denver

Marco Fabian and Luis Montes scored goals 13 minutes apart in the first half and Mexico defeated Martinique 3-1 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday.

Miguel Ponce scored for Mexico in the 90th minute to secure the win.

Mexico, the two-time defending tournament champions, moved to the quarterfinals after losing its first game of pool play to Panama.

Mexico (2-1-0, Pool A) beat Canada 2-0 on Thursday and clinched second place behind Panama and secured a berth in the next round with Sunday's win.

"There's a lot of things we have to correct, and a lot of times victory covers those errors," Mexico coach Jose Manuel De La Torre said. "Winning is great, but after the victory we'll make an analysis of what we did right and wrong."

Kevin Parsemain scored for Martinique, which lost its final two games of the tournament after opening with a 1-0 win over Canada on Saturday. Martinique finished pool play 1-2-0 and now has to wait to find out if it is one of two third-place teams to advance to the quarterfinals.

"It's very simple. Our destiny is not in our hands anymore," Martinique coach Patrick Cavelan said. "We would have preferred to get our qualifications by ourselves but this is the game."

Mexico carried the play for most of the first half Sunday and had several good scoring chances before breaking through in the 20th minute. Rafael Marquez put a hard shot on net that Martinique goalie Kevin Olimpa deflected to the top of the penalty box. Fabian, trailing the play, chopped the rebound over Olimpa to make it 1-0.

It was Fabian's third goal of the Gold Cup.

Montes gave Mexico a 2-0 lead when he sent a low shot into the left side of the net in the 33rd minute.

Martinique made it a one-goal game late in the first half when Parsemain, taken down in the box by Alejandro Flores, scored on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute.

Both teams had chances in the second half, but couldn't capitalize until late when Mexico scored. Miguel Layun carried the ball down the right side and sent a crossing pass to Ponce, who kicked it into the open net to clinch the win for Mexico.

"This was important," Flores said. "We have to go one step at a time, but I think this was a very important game for us. We still have a lot of things to improve, in the midfield and on defense."

Mexico's third goal could impact Martinique's chances of making it to the quarterfinals because goal differential is a factor.

"In the second half we were able to adjust, but we lost focus and allowed the last goal," Cavelan said. "That could be bad for our qualification."

This was the first meeting between the countries since the 1993 Gold Cup. Mexico won that game 9-0 on the way to its first of six Gold Cup crowns.

A seventh title is still possible for the defending champions.

"The objective is to go for the title and that's the commitment to keep working, to get to the final and to get the Gold Cup," De La Torre said. "Pressure or no pressure, that's the way it is, that's the way we work. It's part of our job."

Olive oil, nuts tied to prostate-cancer survival

(NPR) ? Sometimes, it doesn?t take a major diet overhaul to get significant health benefits. Small changes can be helpful, too.

This seems to be the take-home message from a new study in JAMA Internal Medicine linking olive oil and nuts to improved survival from prostate cancer.

Researchers studied the fat intake of more than 4,500 men who had been diagnosed with non-metastatic prostate cancer (this is cancer that?s still confined to the prostate gland and has not spread to another place in the body).
