Could Google Chrome overtake Internet Explorer?

by Bruce Tyson

Created on: January 07, 2012

Google?s Chrome Web browser was only a twinkle in Eric Schmidt?s eye just a few short years ago; now it is one of the top Web browsers in the world. With that kind of explosive growth, the browser has already surpassed Mozilla?s Firefox Web browser in popularity and now seems ready to aggressively fight to be the ultimate victor of the browser wars.?

Once Upon a Time ?

In the Internet?s Dark Ages, browsers like Netscape ruled the landscape. At the time, no one knew they were dinosaurs because they were all people had to navigate the World Wide Web. Netscape spawned from an earlier program, Mosaic, that could be thought of as the primeval soup that got the whole browser thing started.

The first battle in the browser wars began in 1995 when Internet Explorer came on the scene. It was from Microsoft and it was free and soon would come bundled with windows; so it took off like a rocket. (Back then some people complained about its sluggishness, clunky interface, compatibility problems and buggy features just as they do today.) Soon after Internet Explorer emerged, all popular browsers would soon be free. By 2002, about 90 percent of the Web browser market was commanded by Microsoft.?

Although Apple launched its Safari Web browser in 2003, the second battle in the browser wars didn?t begin until Firefox strutted onto the battle field the following year. Firefox quickly commanded the respect of the Internet community and took a solid second place in popularity surveys. Then came Google.

Google vs. Firefox

Google surprised its critics when it released its Chrome browser in 2008. Skeptics doubted that the search engine?s venture into the software business could bear much fruit; they were wrong.?In just a few years, Chrome surpassed Firefox as the second most popular browser in the industry. The search giant recently drove a stake through that browser?s heart by yanking the lucrative search deal that infused Mozilla with millions of dollars in cash.?

Google vs. Microsoft

After conquering Firefox, Google has clear intentions for going after its nemesis, Microsoft and its now-flailing Internet Explorer browser.?

According to statistics referenced by CNN,Google Chrome already is nipping at the heels of the Microsoft browser. In December, Google Chrome version 15 users edged out Internet Explorer version 8 users by one-tenth of one percent.?

When all versions of Chrome are surveyed collectively, Chrome has 27 percent of global market share, compared to Internet?s 37 percent. This startling number reveals that in just a short time, Microsoft has lost more than half of its share of the browser market.?

As analysts and pundits continue to analyze what could be the third and final round of the browser wars, many will likely conclude that Google Chrome could overtake Internet Explorer.?

Wall Street edges up as Alcoa awaited, euro zone weighs (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks edged higher on Monday as investors showed caution ahead of corporate earnings and key auctions for European debt this week.

Alcoa Inc (AA.N), the largest U.S. aluminum producer, will unofficially kick off the earnings season after the closing bell. Alcoa rose 3 percent to $9.43.

Google Inc (GOOG.O) was off 3.7 percent at $626.19 as the biggest drag on both the benchmark S&P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 after Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc's (MMI.N) warning of weaker-than-expected financial results raised concerns about Google's pending acquisition of the smartphone maker.

Debt sales by Spain and Italy later in the week should provide insight about confidence in proposed solutions to the euro zone financial crisis.

"That is what the market wants to get a look at - what is it that these multinationals are seeing in the global environment that gives them pause, or is the tone going to be a little better than expected," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"There is this sense that we really need to see something that is going to convince us that this EU challenge ... is a headwind that can be managed."

After meeting in Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned Greece it will get no more bailout funds until it agrees with creditor banks on a bond swap and pressed for an early deal to avert a potential default.

Investors have grown more skeptical about whether European politicians can craft a plan which moves the region closer to solving its debt crisis. This week's bond auctions by Italy and Spain will gauge the willingness of investors to pump more money into the region's troubled sovereigns.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) gained 25.96 points, or 0.21 percent, to 12,385.88. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) added 2.54 points, or 0.20 percent, to 1,280.35. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) rose 5.01 points, or 0.19 percent, to 2,679.23.

Traders also eyed monetary policy announcements from the European Central Bank and the Bank of England, which will come on Thursday. Investors are keen to hear ECB President Mario Draghi's latest comments on ways to ease the debt crisis.

Fourth-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies were expected to rise 7.8 percent from a year ago, according to a Thomson Reuters forecast, down from 17.6 percent, predicted in July.

The lower revisions were due in part to expected fallout from the euro zone debt crisis and the region's sluggish economic growth.

The S&P 500 faces strong technical resistance as it has been unable to pierce through 1,285, the closing high set in late October.

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) gained 0.4 percent to $423.99 after Goldman Sachs raised its price target, saying the technology giant is set to report a healthy December quarter.

Obama is Too Liberal to Deserve a Second Term (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | American voters have the opportunity to remove one of the most liberal presidents in the history of the United States from office this year. President Barack Obama rode into Washington with virtually no experience in governance. He pasted a broad smile on his face and told the desperate, uneducated and idealistic what they wanted to hear.

The country is now deeper in economic turmoil and debt than at any other time in history. Unemployment statistics hover ever so slightly above those during the Depression era.

President Obama is considered far left of center by Americans, according to a Gallup survey published by Politico. Liberals do not understand that the money they are spending is a result of the labor of others. The business owners Democrats consider so vile create the jobs that provide the paychecks the far-left enjoys spending with total abandon. Fiscal conservatism is on the rise in America. Independents, libertarians and the illusive moderate Democrat will determine the next inhabitant of the oval office.

President Obama ranks at the top of the list of most liberal presidents in America, no other commander in chief worked harder to deteriorate individual freedom, personal responsibility and crush the free market which once made the United States the most prosperous nation in the world. Thankfully President Obama is far more of a politician than he professed during the campaign or he would have pushed even harder to cripple the economy with unsustainable spending and tax increases.

After the initial adulation subsided, the president had to produce results and not just parrot pep rally speeches. Obama is now in campaign mode, allowing his advisors to weigh all the angles of every issue before uttering a wrong word and risk losing precious votes.

The president's belief in social justice and a redistribution of wealth will be his ultimate downfall. The Occupy Wall Street folks are Obama's primary constituency and even they have grown disenfranchised will his abysmal leadership skills. Unemployed protesters walking around with crudely worded signs in tents in public parks want to know when they are going to get all the freebies their enigmatic champion of the downtrodden promised.

Times are tough and it will take a lot of hard work, dedication, perseverance and self-reliance to keep the bills paid and a roof over your head. A man who has always relied on the taxpayers for a paycheck is ill-equipped to direct the American economy.
